Evil in the Land

Through a book group I am in with my church, I have been studying Jeremiah, as well as other parts of the Old Testament.  The parallels that exist between Judah’s day and the current state of America (or most modern countries, for that matter) are astounding.  And worrisome.

“You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord:
When men fall, do they not rise again?
If one turns away, does he not return?
5 Why then has this people turned away
in perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit;
they refuse to return.
6 I have paid attention and listened,
but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
7 Even the stork in the heavens
knows her times,
and the turtledove, swallow, and crane
keep the time of their coming,
but my people know not
the rules of the Lord.

8 “How can you say, ‘We are wise,
and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
has made it into a lie.
9 The wise men shall be put to shame;
they shall be dismayed and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
so what wisdom is in them?
10 Therefore I will give their wives to others
and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
everyone is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.
11 They have healed the wound of my people lightly,
saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
No, they were not at all ashamed;
they did not know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.
13 When I would gather them, declares the Lord,
there are no grapes on the vine,
nor figs on the fig tree;
even the leaves are withered,
and what I gave them has passed away from them.”
– Jeremiah 8 (ESV)

In 2 Chronicles 15 it describes both what happens to those who seek God and to those who forsake Him:

“Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The Lord is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law, 4 but when in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them. 5 In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands. 6 They were broken in pieces. Nation was crushed by nation and city by city, for God troubled them with every sort of distress. 7 But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”  (ESV)

I am fearful for our country.  Every predominantly Christian nation in history has gone through these cycles, so it is “nothing new under the sun.”  But that does not mean that God doesn’t see our sin in this present day…and hate it.

  1. Hmmm, good “food for thought” Heid.
    I often watch the news waiting on Russia/Turkey. When they start doing the war dance I’ll start cheering.
    I am appalled right now about the AIG bonus’/ bailout.
    It makes me MAD. If there hadn’t been a bail out they certainly wouldn’t be seeing any bonus’…contracts or NOT, they made the company fail.
    Sin is HUGE, and sometimes I feel like I’m fighting a lossing battle, and am grateful I’m on the winning side, but still I have FAMILY on the lossing team, and there isn’t much I can do to change that. Praying for them, doesn’t make God answer it, doesn’t make them CHOOSE it. I can see why he hates it. I do to.
    Why can’t people choose love over hate, truth over lies, giving instead of greed and taking. Oh Glory be the day when we are in heaven celebrating what is GOOD over what we witnessed here.
