Help! I’m in an eating rut!

After a week of staycation, and eating out almost every day, I am continuing to crave unhealthy foods.  I am back to making healthy breakfasts and dinners, but during the day I gorge myself on leftover pizza and maple fudge.  That can’t be good for the little one growing inside me…

Any ideas on how to re-set my brain to crave healthy stuff again?

  1. We had Brown Rice and Black Bean Burritos tonight for dinner. Not super duper healthy but different and lots of protein and fiber!

I kind of made it up, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s done it this way before:

While cooking the rice separately I heat up a can of black beans (I’ve soaked and used dried before too, less sodium), half a can of corn (try no salt added), a whole jar of salsa (your favorite brand), some cumin, oregano, and whatever other spices you think sound good. Fill up the jar of salsa with water and add to skillet. Add the cooked rice (as much or little as you like) and simmer until water evaporates (no one likes runny burritos!).

I like to heat up my flour tortilla on a small nonstick skillet over medium heat, makes it slightly crisp around the edges.

Slather on a Tbsp of light sour cream, sprinkle with shredded cheddar, chopped tomatoes, whatever else you like, and of course, top with rice and bean mixture.

This is my go-to meal whenever I don’t have any meat thawed.

  2. I can understand your position – sometimes I go through snacking periods where I just can’t resist something sweet.

The key, I’ve found, is to stay away from ANYTHING processed during the middle of the day, because it inevitably has more salt, sugar, fat, and other not good things.

The best thing I’ve found because it’s easy and very “grabable” is grapes! They satisfy my oral fixation (seriously, I have one!) and you can have just a few or a whole bowl full and they’re good for you!

If you want salty, I usually go for either chips and salsa (salsa is very low in calories, but chips are not, so you kinda gotta not finish off the whole bag…like I tend to do) or mini pretzels and good mustard (mustard has virtually no calories but tastes so good!)

Those are my best munchy snacks to have around. In general, having LOTS of fruit around helps me eat better. Berries in particular, especially since they’re so cheap in the summer.

    Good luck!

  3. Dude, you’re pregnant! You’re SUPPOSED to crave unhealthy things. I say just make sure you get some healthy food in at each meal and don’t beat yourself up about unhealthy snacking (within reason).

  4. Ugh. I know how you feel. It’s been two months and I was doing okay for a few weeks there and then just totally fell off the wagon. And of course the whole ‘you need more calories when you’re nursing than when you’re pregnant’ bit is NOT helping. Silly brain!
